ON MONDAY, MAY 8, 2006The Honorable Senator Dato Sri Effendi Norwawi, Minister in the Prime Ministers Department; the Hon. Tan Kok Hong, Johor State Government Exco for International Trade & Industry; Representatives of MIDA, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas Free Zone, our contractor and my colleagues from Atlanta and our parent company, novartis; distinguished guests, including of course, our friends from the media.. Good Afternoon and welcome to this ground breaking ceremony for CIBA Visions first manufacturing plant in Malaysia.We are greatly honoured by the presence of the honorable minister. Especially ---- as James Kong has mentioned --- knowing that he has the tremendous task of overseeing implementation of the 9th Malaysia plan.The Ciba Vision facility here at the PTP free zone will manufacture one of the most in-demand, high-tech contact lenses in the world today-our revolutionary O2OPTIX lens.These high quality lenses, produced in this plant, will be labeled Made in Malaysia and exported to markets in 70 countries around the globe.Ciba Vision looks forward to becoming part of southern Johors booming industrial fraternity with our anticipated opening of this facility in the first quarter of 2007.We will offer a Clean, Safe, Air-Conditioned and user-friendly work environment and we will need to . Since the plant will operate 24 Hours a day, seven days a week in order to meet the increasing world-wide demand for O2OPTIX lenses.In according with our plan, hiring for key management positions has already begun. Once this is complete, we will begin the general hiring process and information about employment inquiries will be available in the very near future. When we reach full production capacity, we expect to employee between 2,000 and 3,000 associates.We known this state-of-the-art facility and the local talent base will allow Ciba Version to continue producing safe, effective products that make a difference in the lives of people around the world.The revolutionary silicone hydrogel material which forms the platform for O2OPTIX allows five times more oxygen to the eye. More oxygen means whiter, brighter, heathly-looking eyes. It also means O2OPTIX is approved for occasional overnight wear.This is important because research tells us that two out of three soft contact lens wearers accidentally fall asleep or nap in their lenses at least once a month. Because more oxygen is allowed to reach the eye, O2OPTIX offers wearers the convenience of sleeping in their lenses for up to 6 consecutive nights.While not every patient is a candidate for extended wear lenses, O2OPTIX is truly changing not only the way eye care practitioners prescribe contact lenses, but also the way patients are able to wear them.These innovations are not possible without investment in research and development, which is critically important to Ciba Vision indeed, one of the factors influencing our decision to locate this plant in Malaysia is the encouragement that the Malaysian government gives to R & D.There are several other reasons were excited about this new manufacturing facility in Johor.It allows us to increase production capacity of our O2OPTIX contact lens.. which, due to its extraordinary breathability, is extremely popular with lens wearers.The facility in Johor will also allow us to increase support to our operations in Asia and other markets worldwide --- allowing more strategic links, especially with our existing manufacturing plant in Batam and our regional distribution facility in Singapore.None of this would be possible without the involvement and commitment of many people.I would like to express Ciba Visions gratitude to the representatives of MIDA and the ministers office for their strong support in the construction of this facility.We look forward to working together with the management of the PTP free zone, which has to date provided model cooperation.
